The Masked Troupe is the "bard class" of Where Winds Meet β€” a sect built around performance rather than traditional martial arts. Members are known as Virtuosos: wandering performers who pursue artistic perfection (the Dao) through creativity, music, and dance.

⚠️ Important: The Masked Troupe's combat martial arts and weapons are currently not yet implemented in the global release. This guide covers everything you CAN do β€” joining, ranking up, earning rewards, and mastering the performance systems. Combat content will be added when the devs release it.

How to Join

Joining the Masked Troupe is one of the more involved sect initiations, but unlike Velvet Shade, you don't need a partner. Here's the step-by-step:

Prerequisites

RequirementDetail
Online ModeMust be in online mode (not offline/single-player)
Reach KaifengKaifeng City unlocks during the main story (Chapter 2+)
Performance EmotesHave at least one instrument or dance emote unlocked

Step-by-Step Initiation

  1. Travel to Fairgrounds, Kaifeng City β€” The Fairgrounds are in the northern part of the city, near the water.

  2. Find Han Yanluo β€” She's on a small boat west of the central temple area in Fairgrounds. Look for an NPC in performer's attire.

  3. Exhaust her dialogue β€” Talk to her about the Masked Troupe, its history, and what it means to be a Virtuoso.

  4. Accept the invitation β€” When she asks if you're interested, choose "I'm willing to" to begin the initiation quest.

  5. Perform! β€” Open your emote menu β†’ Talents tab β†’ select an instrument or dance. Perform in a public area where other players can see you.

  6. Earn 10 Likes from other players β€” This is the gate. Other players must manually "Like" your performance. You need 10 Likes total.

  7. Return to Han Yanluo β€” Once you have your 10 Likes, report back to finalize your membership.

Tips for Getting 10 Likes Fast

StrategyDetail
Go to Petalfall CrossingThe most popular gathering spot for performers β€” high player traffic
Perform during peak hoursEvenings and weekends have the most players online
Pick a rare instrumentPlayers are more likely to Like unique performances
Ask in World ChatA polite "LF Likes at Fairgrounds, will Like back!" goes a long way
Coordinate with friendsBring a group and trade Likes

Sect Rules (Precepts)

The Masked Troupe demands you maintain the artistic image. Break these rules and an NPC enforcer will appear β€” you'll need to use Tai Chi to throw them into the water to maintain secrecy.

#RuleWhat It Means
1No BeggingNever ask for handouts, coins, or free items from other players
2No Partnership EmotesAvoid romantic or partnered gestures (hand-holding, couple poses, etc.)
3No MarriageRomance and marriage are forbidden β€” your art comes first
4Complete Outfit RequiredNever be missing top OR bottom clothing pieces in public
5Weekly Popularity QuotaEarn 1,000 Performer Popularity points per week (primarily via Spotlight Mode)

Weekly Popularity Guide

Spotlight Mode is your main source of popularity points:

Spotlight Mode performance (full set)~200-300 points
Receiving player Likes~10-20 per Like
Completing performance-related dailies~50-100 each

Pro tip: Do Spotlight Mode 4-5 times spread across the week. Don't cram it all on Sunday night β€” performance quality affects your score, and tired fingers make bad music.

Ranks & Rewards (5 Tiers)

The Masked Troupe has a 5-tier rank system. You climb by earning popularity and completing Troupe-related activities.

Key NPCs & Lore

Hu Changyi β€” Current Troupe Master

The free-spirited leader of the Masked Troupe. Hu Changyi avoids conflict at all costs and lives by two core tenets:

  • "Seek Truth in Freedom" β€” Art cannot flourish under rigid rules. True expression requires liberty.
  • "Seek Abundance in Simplicity" β€” The greatest performances come from honest emotion, not elaborate technique.

He's often found near the performance stage at Fairgrounds, offering advice and Troupe quests.

Gongsu Da Niang β€” Second Troupe Master (Historical)

A legendary dancer from the Tang Dynasty, famous for incorporating bladed weapons into her performances. Her signature routine β€” dancing with twin swords β€” was said to be so mesmerizing that audiences forgot they were watching a martial display.

After the An Lushan Rebellion (755-763 AD), Gongsu Da Niang led the Troupe into seclusion to preserve their art. Her legacy hints at what the Masked Troupe's eventual combat style might look like: a dance-weapon hybrid blending graceful movement with lethal precision.

Han Yanluo β€” Recruitment Officer

Your first contact with the Troupe. She handles new member initiation and introductory quests. Find her on her boat at Fairgrounds.

Spotlight Mode

Spotlight Mode is the Troupe's signature activity:

  1. Enter Spotlight Mode at any performance area (Fairgrounds stage recommended)
  2. Choose your act β€” instrument, dance, or both
  3. Other players watch and rate your performance
  4. High-rated performances appear on the regional leaderboard
  5. Earn popularity points and exclusive rewards

Performance quality matters. The game's rhythm mechanics judge your timing. Practice makes perfect β€” and better scores = faster rank progression.

Pros & Cons

βœ… Pros❌ Cons

Persist cosmetics after leavingLikes system = social dependency
Relaxed, low-pressure vibeNo PvP or PvE combat advantage
Rich lore and NPC storiesSlow rank progression

Strategy: Use Masked Troupe as a "Cosmetic Pit Stop"

A popular strategy among veteran players:

  1. Join Masked Troupe early (as soon as you reach Kaifeng)
  2. Grind to Standing Musician (Rank 2) β€” this unlocks the outfit and hairstyle
  3. Leave for a combat sect (Well of Heaven, Midnight Blades, etc.)
  4. Keep all your unlocked cosmetics

This gets you the fashion rewards without committing to the long grind to Music Director. The Standing Musician rank takes about 2 weeks of consistent weekly quotas.

FAQ

Q: Does the Masked Troupe have weapons yet? A: No. The sect page hints at "twindrums" but martial arts are listed as TBD. Expected in a future update.

Q: Is it worth joining if I don't care about performances? A: Only as a cosmetic pit stop (see strategy above). For combat-focused players, join, grab the Rank 2 outfit, and leave.

Q: Can I perform anywhere? A: Anywhere in online mode, but designated performance areas (Fairgrounds, Petalfall Crossing) have higher player traffic = easier Likes.

Q: What happens if I break a sect rule? A: An enforcer NPC appears. Use Tai Chi to throw them into the nearest body of water. This is actually a fun mini-game, not a harsh punishment.

Q: Does Spotlight Mode require real musical skill? A: No β€” it's a rhythm mini-game similar to Guitar Hero or osu!. Timing matters but it's accessible to everyone.

Q: Will the Masked Troupe get combat weapons in Hidden Mountain? A: Not confirmed. The Hidden Mountain expansion focuses on Mohist Hill. Masked Troupe combat is likely a separate future update.
